Waring School Exterior
Beverly, Massachusetts
The outdoor space for the Waring School, an independent school in Beverly, MA for students grades 6-12. Working closely with OPAL Architects, a Maine-based firm whose focus is on highly sustainable practices, Ground created an outdoor design that works seamlessly with the architecture and creates richly layered, textured spaces for the students and faculty to enjoy.
Ground’s design of the exterior is inspired by the dramatic existing topography, tying into steep slopes and site elevations. The outdoor spaces create an entry threshold to the campus. Rainwater runoff is collected from the roof and passes over river rocks on the ground plane. The elevator indoors provides the accessible connection between the upper and lower areas, creating a clean and simple solution resolving the site’s significant elevation change. The site also cleverly incorporates river rocks and a bridge across the existing landscape.
